ABOUT THIS PRESENTATION
As we work amidst the perils of the pandemic, any other global issue may seem irrelevant, even trivial. However, we believe that it is essential that we recognize ways the current pandemic may be foreshadowing the distress and disruption of the intensifying climate and ecological crisis.
With Covid-19, the unseen, nonhuman world has invaded the consulting room, and has obliterated the physical sharing of the dyad. We are faced with trying to navigate our own isolation, distress and disruption.
In this seminar we will explore how to use our analytic understanding to adapt to this sudden, forced change, and its ensuing environmental and interpersonal trauma. We will challenge aspects of our compulsion, our longing, to “return to normalcy” after the current epidemic subsides. We will instead reflect on how to utilize the sudden rupture to foster a reparative shift towards more sustainable lives. We will also discuss ways of dealing with disavowal, dissociation and other defences, to instead facilitate ways to hold greater awareness. We will highlight the importance of processing grief, fear, guilt and anger as part of fostering individual and social resilience.
