SYNOPSIS
Dr. McWilliams will reflect on issues involved in psychoanalytic supervision and consultation, with a special focus on mentoring in analytic institutes. She will summarize both the gratifications and the challenges of supervising candidates, addressing dynamics involving boundaries, regressive pulls, issues of psychoanalytic identity, idealization and devaluation, splitting, fears about exposure, and systemic pressures that may compromise patient care. In the context of current controversies about psychoanalytic training, she will invite a conversation about complications of supervising at this level in the context of what is often an enmeshed professional community.
