DATE:     Saturday January 31, 2015

ABOUT THE DAY:

Saturday Morning Presentation: From Normal Multiplicity to Traumatic Dissociation

This presentation will attempt to make some sense of the confusion that now attends the use of the term dissociation.  I will explore the origins of the term, the differences in the way interpersonal analysts, object relations analysts, and trauma specialists use the word, and the implications of each for an understanding of psychic structure and therapeutic action.  The presentation draws on two extended clinical vignettes.

Saturday Afternoon Presentation:  Explorations on the Dark Side of Psychoanalysis:  A Relational Reconsideration of Empathic Attunement

Though most clinicians agree with the centrality of empathic responsiveness to therapeutic action, most conceptualizations of such empathy involve the analyst’s attempts to compassionately apprehend the patient’s experience from within the patient’s perspective.  This presentation will explore the therapeutic centrality of the analyst’s empathic attunement with dissociated and evacuated complementary identifications in the patient.  We will also look at such empathic complementarity as it impacts the patient’s reception and processing of such evacuated self states emanating from the analyst.  The presentation will draw heavily on the works of Klein, Racker, Winnicott, and Bion, in an attempt to more closely examine the therapeutic meaning of Bion’s concept of metabolizing toxic introjects and projections.  Such metabolization from within this reconceptualization of empathic immersion will constitute an essential and often overlooked aspect of therapeutic action.

Earlybird Deadline is January 9, 2015
